For session musicians: An aide-memoire of sets with a Celtic influence

The Carps Session – Miserden, Glos

Location

This fortnightly session takes place in the Carpenters Arms pub in Miserden, Gloucestershire GL6 7JA

Session Characteristics

The Carps Session has its very own particular ‘feel’, which obviously appeals to regular attendees – both playing and listening – and which makes this session such a delight! The musical standard is fairly high, but that should not intimidate anyone wanting to join in.

Key points are:

  • With regard to instruments, we are a mixture of bagpipes – Uilleann , Northumbrian and English – mandolins, guitars, banjos, percussion, whistles, hammered dulcimers, melodians and other oddities .
  • Acoustics are OK although a bit cramped; we have had up to some 20 players but that was tight!
  • We invite singers and respect them, and are usually silent whilst they render their song, but accompaniment is available if appropriate.
  • We try to strike a balance of some 1/3 song and 2/3 tunes.
  • We do favour Celtic music but that is not written in stone.
  • We are keen that everyone should have a turn and rotate accordingly. If you wish to ‘pass’ on your opportunity, you of course may.
  • Most of us play in various bands so we do have a truly large selection of tunes and songs …too numerous to mention.

Additional Info

The great thing is that people are made welcome, however apprehensive they may be. It is a friendly village pub and chips will often be provided for the participating musicians at half time!

And from Trip Advisor…

Great little pub in a really nice little town in the Cotswolds. We really enjoyed the food, solid pub grub. All the staff were really friendly, always happy for a chat and gave us some great advice for the local area. The Irish Music night on a Tuesday is something to experience. So good.
